Dear Curtis,
To try out your theory on data dedup, I took two Office 2007 power points files.

I created one with some images and some text and some graphics.

The second, I created with some very minor edits to the title slides.

I saved both.

Then I in turn attempted to find any "block level duplicates" between t hem. How did I try this? I ran a circular CRC starting from each and ever start offset of the file.

I found no duplicates.

Then I used a popular open source program called to find sub content in a file.

It also found no similar sub content between the two files.

Then I ran the two fils through hexdiff and modified hexdiff to proceed byte by byte at increasing offsets.

No common portions were found.

Then I read up on the Microsoft open office document format specification

It turns ou that Office ZIPs using the deflate algorithm by way of pkzip to compres the whole file.

Therefore each and ever byte changes even with a small edit to any of the files.

Thus I conclude your blog is extremely misleading and actually scientifically incorrect.

Please don't mislead users with out actually understanding the concept of dedup.

Block level Dedup will properly catch edits to text based and non encoded data, but not encoded data like Powerpoint that you use in your example.

It is always a good idea to try out the experiment on the data you report in your blog before you put pen to parer.

Dedupe is great for data protection, because the nature of backup is that you back up the same files over and over - so you'll see lots of block level dupes. However, people are increasingly interested in data reduction for online storage, and the comparisons of dedupe and compression ratios for online storage are quite different.

It's also the case that the 2:1 ratio often cited for compression is one that applies to generic compressors operating on a stream of data. Files are not streams of data going by on a wire. There are new compression techniques that work on online file data that get 10X or 20X results for online data. This is especially interesting for nearline and archival stores.

Finally, dedupe and compression are not mutually exclusive. There is no reason that a data reduction engine that is examining a set of files can not both looks for patterns (the basis of compression) and duplicates (the basis for dedupe). In fact, done right, you can look for duplicate patterns, which would give you better results than looking for just duplicate strings of bits. Why think "Compression Versus Dedupe" when it should be "Compression AND dedupe"?

Know how many web pages you are about to print
There are times when you want the full page of information to print, but you don’t know how many pages it will be. Clicking the "print" button on your browser could result in lots of additional, unwanted pages. Here's how to find out the number of pages you are going to print:

Go to the File menu on your browser's tool bar and select "Print Preview". This will allow you to see how many pages will print and where the page breaks fall. Adjust the margins to get any lone lines to print on the previous page with the rest.

To do this, select "Page Setup" under the File menu to adjust your margins. Once you know what you want to print, under the "print dialog box", you can select just the current page or a range of pages.
However, if you want best printing quality, you will require printer ink cartridges which are of the highest quality too. The tip that is worth a hundred dollars is that remanufactured printer ink cartridges which offer the same high quality as the original ones. Here are more helpful printer tips and tricks.

I've had the same problem myself...but i found a function which where you can get the files data before you upload it...i guess...

I tried:

FileUpload1.FileBytes.LongLength

And it gave me the information that i needed...but still, yes, you are right, at execution time or at upload time, you'll get the errors that you've mentioned, and the smartest solution at this point (point of .net framework development), it would be to have custom error pages, that you can redirect to...

The necessity she sees is the need for people in Atlanta to be able to obtain quality services from competent service providers and professionals. Mamtha was frustrated in her search for a reliable contractor to fix her leaky roof. Her calls for quotes often went unanswered, and therefore, she found the process demoralizing.

Then, it occurred to her that if www.ebay.com can match buyers and sellers together efficiently for items, why couldn't she do the same thing for services in Atlanta? Mamtha and her husband's brain child www.iGanit.com (ganit is an Indian word for "calculate") was born by launching www.AtlantaBestBargains.com as a Web 2.0 marketplace for the city. Web 2.0 is the evolution of the Internet as a platform for software applications beyond the traditional website or blog.

Web 2.0 could be best described as the next generation of websites that are moving beyond static content towards providing rich interactive and social networking features. Myspace.com, YouTube.com, and Digg.com are examples of popular Web 2.0 websites which enable their users to network and share content, music, videos and opinions. The importance of Web 2.0 applications can be illustrated in the buyout of these popular web destinations by major corporations. It is common knowledge that News Corp shelled out 580 million dollars for MySpace.com and Google invested 1.65 billion in acquiring YouTube.com. These sites or web applications have become almost as popular as search engines, the mainstays of Web 1.0. But the ramifications of all of this would have been lost on Mamtha when she first arrived here.

Mrs. A, as she affectionately refers to herself, left the beautiful city of Bangalore with little more than great hopes and expectations about the US as the land of opportunity. Mamtha has very fond memories of her homeland but is happy about her decision to move here. Initially, she was a bit bored with her new life and began looking for work in Atlanta. Eventually, she found employment, but her next challenge was to learn to drive. In India, people, women in particular either find a bus or an auto rickshaw if they want to go somewhere, but here in Atlanta, this is not an option.

Ms. Anantharaman subsequently learned to drive because she needed to drive herself to her work place. It was so liberating, although she does admit that, initially, driving on I-285 was daunting. These are just some of the small victories she had in her new homeland.

She feels AtlantaBestBargains.com and iGanit.com will enable her "to do something on her own as an entrepreneur and also make a difference in people's lives." She especially sees it helping small business owners who offer great service at low cost. Ms. Anantharaman opines that "the big companies often win people's business with their huge brand name and then subcontract the work to someone else at a fraction of the price they charge their customers." In contrast, AtlantaBestBargains.com will enable people in the city to buy and sell services safely and securely. Her site features a rating system for service providers so buyers can feel secure knowing they are acquiring services from a reputable company or individual with a track record on their system. These types of rating systems tend to discourage fraud on Web 2.0 services or older sites like eBay.

While AtlantaBestBargains.com will lend itself to the selling of some products like cars, real estate, collectibles, used merchandise, and even employment listings, its primary focus will be on facilitating the service marketplace. Moreover, http://www.iGanit.com and http://www.AtlantaBestBargains.com will be one of the first service marketplaces to allow users to upload video promotions by service professions. It is inevitable that video content would emerge on the web beyond just entertainment and geared towards business promotion, and in this regard, Mamtha Anantharaman is giving Atlanta a vision of Web 2.0 to come.

Since I have been the victim of offshore outsourcing, I feel that I have some perspective and justification to comment on your outsourcing article.

First, let me say something up front: being outsourced was just about the best thing that could have happened to me. Firstly, I received a significant severance settlement; secondly I no longer had to suffer through the enormous job-related stress; thirdly, I landed a great new job.

So, back to outsourcing. In keeping with the process, I first had to train my replacement. Nice young Indian gentleman. Intelligent. And, by the way, he left his company for a better position, not long after the outsourcing happened (so much for knowledge transfer...)

So, what is outsourcing all about? Firstly, let me say that all the economic justification referenced in your article is garbage. It is produced by economic theorists so that companies can justify what they do.

How can I say that. Simple: from personal experience. My former employer is obviously in high tech, supplying sophisticated applications to large multinational companies.

It takes a LONG time to train a software developer; not just computing knowledge, but to develop sufficient domain knowledge to be functional.

The people who were let go (myself included) had many years of domain-relevant experience. The offshore replacement workers had on average, very little computing experience and NO domain knowledge. If the intent is to make use of the large offshore worker pool, where is the advantage? The remaining developers and managers are going to be spending much of their time in training the offshore workers, and examining the work product. So much for a competitive advantage gained from offshoring. Its a variation on Brooks' mythical man month.

Examine the companies who indulge in offshore outsourcing. Most of them are large companies, with ingrown and ineffective beaurocracies. The companies exist so that managers can be promoted to sucessively higer positions; producing software is incidental.

In these companies, what matters most is the share price, and in particular increasing the share price.

Now, how do you increase share price these days? By increasing income and profits. How do you increase income/profit? There are two ways: sell more product, and spend less money. In typical North American Big Company fashion, the easy route is chosen: spend less money, instead of working harder to increase profit. So, spend less by getting rid of some workers.

Now, this may seem to be a very short-sighted approach, and indeed it is. So, why does it happen? Because the mid- and upper-level managers who instigate such policies are only in those positions for a relatively short period of time. Upon successful completion of their assigned goals, typically in the two to three year timeframe, they move on. When they move on, usually via promotion, they leave the situation behind, for some other new manager/VP to address.

This works in large corporations because there is a form of corporate inertia. It takes a while for the effects of such self-destructive behavior to be noticable, and the executives responsible for the situation are long gone.

Another point. With few exceptions, the large companies, i.e. the ones doing the outsourcing, are not the ones producing the innovative products. That occurs in the smaller and medium sized companies, who realize that they cannot afford to conduct such outsourcing programs. By the way, look to India and other countries to deliver more of the innovative products -- the true consequence of offshoring.

Think about it for a moment. Forget race or religion or any such irrelevant information; how on earth is it possible to get rid of large numbers of experienced, competent individuals, and hope to create competitive products using very inexperienced individuals in a totally different country? Where is the economic sense in that.

More likely, the outsourcing is the unthinking response of corporate dinosaurs who, at least at some level, realize that they are not nearly as competitve as they once were, and take the easy way out to attempt to regain the elusive competiveness.

One last point. Notice that I have not made much mention of the Indian software developers who receive the benefits of this self-destructive corporate practise. Thats because I have no grudges or ill-will regarding them. In their situations, I would do the same thing.

Anyway, hopefully this is the last time that I have to invest much thought in the situation. If I am fortunate, I will be able to stay with the smaller and medium sized companies, where the executive management is at least sufficiently sentient to realize that short-term goals only lead to extinction.
